PRIDE training for prospective adoptive families

PRIDE training prepares prospective adoptive parents to welcome a child and build a lasting family relationship.

Participants learn about the needs of children who may have experienced separation, loss, foster care or other difficult events. They discuss how experiences in the early years of life can affect a child’s development, emotions, behaviour and relationships.

The programme covers, among other things:

• motivation for adoption and expectations of parenthood;
• the child’s developmental, emotional and psychological needs;
• the importance of the child’s life story and origins;
• the impact of loss, separation and earlier experiences on the child’s functioning;
• building attachment and a sense of safety;
• supporting a child in learning about their own story;
• preparing for questions about the biological family and adoption;
• dealing with parenting difficulties;
• creating an open, stable and supportive family;
• cooperating with an adoption centre and specialists.

The training also provides time to reflect on one’s readiness for adoption. Participants can examine their expectations of parenthood, talk about concerns and gain a better understanding of what a child joining a new family may need.

The aim is to prepare prospective adoptive parents to welcome a child with their history, experiences and needs, and to build a relationship based on safety, acceptance and mutual trust.
