Cognitive Skills Development Programme
Activities developing memory, concentration and independent thinking
The Cognitive Skills Development Programme is for children and young people who want to learn more about their abilities, develop concentration and find it easier to deal with tasks requiring thought.
During the sessions, participants learn through play, conversation, experimentation, games, puzzles and practical exercises. Activities are adapted to the participants’ age, abilities and individual pace.
What do we develop?
During the sessions we work on:
- concentration and sustaining attention;
- memory and effective memorisation;
- mnemonics, or methods that make information easier to remember;
- observation skills;
- logical thinking;
- creativity and finding different solutions;
- planning and organising work;
- problem-solving;
- cause-and-effect thinking;
- spatial orientation;
- flexibility of thinking;
- independence and confidence in one’s abilities;
- learning strategies.
Mnemonics — practical ways to improve memory
Participants learn mnemonics that help them organise and remember information. Depending on their age and needs, these may include associations, creating images and stories, grouping information, rhythm, rhyme and mind maps. Children learn that memory can be practised and that it is worth looking for their own effective way of learning.
What are the sessions like?
We use, among other things:
- educational and board games;
- puzzles, riddles and logic tasks;
- memory and mnemonic exercises;
- activities developing attention and observation;
- language and creative exercises;
- experiments and practical investigations;
- constructing and building;
- elements of programming and algorithmic thinking;
- tasks requiring cooperation;
- relaxation exercises supporting concentration.
This is not about competition or grading. What matters is creating a safe atmosphere in which a child can try, make mistakes, look for their own solutions and gradually develop independence.
Who is it for?
The sessions are intended for children and young people who:
- have difficulties with concentration;
- need more time to complete a task;
- become discouraged quickly;
- want to improve their memory and organise their learning;
- enjoy puzzles, experiments and creative tasks;
- need a calm, supportive place to develop their abilities.
The programme can be adapted to participants’ individual needs, age, abilities and pace.
Important
The Cognitive Skills Development Programme is developmental and educational in nature. The sessions do not replace psychological assessment, therapy or consultation with a specialist. Their purpose is to support the child’s everyday functioning, develop their strengths and build a positive approach to learning.
Benefits for the child
Regular participation can help a child:
- stay focused on a task for longer;
- remember information better using the mnemonics they have learned;
- approach more difficult exercises more calmly;
- look for several ways to solve a problem;
- develop independence;
- cooperate with others;
- notice their own progress;
- build a sense of agency.
